Making Sense Of Multiple Sclerosis
![]() |
Surely you will learn a thing or two by reading the following article.
Multiple sclerosis or MS is a mystery disease that affects the central nervous system. There are different versions of the disease that can cause a variety of symptoms; seemingly without rhyme or reason. Symptoms of MS vary greatly from person to person and from time to time in the same person. Because of its unpredictability, scientists have yet to establish a cause for the disease. In this article, we'll examine the facts about MS and the available treatment options.
The disease multiple sclerosis attacks myelin, which is the protective covering of the brain and spinal cord, causing inflammation and often damaging the myelin in patches. When this happens, the usual flow of nerve impulses along nerve fibers is interrupted or distorted. The result may be the reason for the wide variety of MS symptoms, depending upon what part or parts of the central nervous system are affected.
The damaged parts of myelin are often called "lesions" or "plaques." There is evidence that permanent damage to nerve fibers may occur in association with the attack on myelin. The severity of MS, progression and specific symptoms cannot be predicted at the time of diagnosis. MS is three times more likely to occur in women than in men, and is seen most commonly in people of northern European background.
The symptoms of MS vary greatly from person to person and can include vision disturbances, extreme fatigue, loss of balance, problems with coordination, stiffness of muscles, speech problems, bladder and bowel problems, short-term memory problems, and even partial or complete paralysis. One thing that's important to remember about multiple sclerosis is that patients will not necessarily experience all of the symptoms. As well, the symptoms improve during periods of remission. The main clinical measure of disability progression and severity of the symptoms is the Expanded Disability Status Scale or EDSS.
While there is no cure for multiple sclerosis, there are a number of effective treatment therapies. The combination of medication, therapy and counseling has proven to be extremely beneficial to people suffering from MS. However, MS is not fatal, so with medical treatment and lifestyle changes, patients can expect to live a normal or near normal life span, thanks to continuing MS research and improvements in the treatment of symptoms. Some patients choose to explore alternative methods of treatment, but there is no clinical evidence to support claims that these methods work.
There is hope for a cure for multiple sclerosis, but until that time, you must be active in managing your symptoms. Speak to your doctor about medications that help to control spasms, bladder problems, and pain and fatigue, and make lifestyle changes that will allow you to live safely. Consulting groups like the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation will also be helpful because they can recommend support within your community. Being active in your treatment is extremely important because your attitude is the most powerful tool in your treatment. The will to live a full life will help to defeat multiple sclerosis.

Today's Tip On Multiple Sclerosis
There is no cure for MS, so you have to choose a type of multiple sclerosis treatment method that is both effective and comfortable for you to use. The first thing that you should do is consult your doctor for a list of therapies and information on dosages, side effects, and the success rate of the drugs. Your local branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society can also be a valuable resource. Speak to other patients about their experiences and which medications worked for them. Keep in mind that every patient is different and a drug that worked for someone else may not work for you. |
