Multiple Sclerosis Treatment Options

Please allow me to present you this topic as it won't take long before you will get to know everything about it.

Multiple sclerosis is a disorder that has a negative effect on the functioning of the central nervous system. This is because it causes lesions in the spinal column, brain and/or optic nerves. The nerves in the CNS are protected by a fibrous tissue called myelin which also helps conduct impulses properly. When myelin missing or the nerves are damaged, symptoms may result which may be indicative of MS. Unfortunately there is no cure for at this time, but there are a variety of promising multiple sclerosis treatment options.

There are four different types of MS which have a lot to do with how severe symptoms are and how often they occur. The most common type is called MS with relapsing-remitting characteristics which occurs in approximately 85 percent of cases. The other three types are primary-progressive, secondary-progressive and progressive relapsing. These categories of MS are less common and occur in a smaller percentage of patients. If you are diagnosed with MS, your treatment will be based on what your doctor feels is best for your particular type of MS and what symptoms you are having.

Many MS patients take courses of corticosteroids during periods called excaberations, which are periods where symptoms are worsened. Sometimes, these periods can be brought on by excessive heat or cold, infection or stress. There are a variety of prescription drugs that may also be effective when it comes to treating the symptoms of MS. They include medications such as Avonex, Betaseron and Copaxone. In addition to managing your symptoms with medication, you may also be directed to attend various types of therapy. Therapy can teach your body and mind how to cope with the effects of multiple sclerosis.

For example, many patients find relief from symptoms and/or better symptom management through physical therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy. Even counseling for the emotional issues related to living with MS can be helpful for patients and their loved ones. If you or a family member have been recently diagnosed with MS, you may feel overwhelmed and frightened. A frank discussion about multiple sclerosis treatment options can help ease your mind and give you choices regarding the management of your condition. Many individuals with MS are able to live normal lives without a noticeable reduction of life span thanks to today's treatments.

Today's Tip On Multiple Sclerosis

There are so many things that can be done to make a home safer for people living with multiple sclerosis. For instance, choose furniture with rounded edges, put protective padding around the corners of tables, and whenever possible, place furniture against the wall. Use a portable phone or beeper so that the patient can call for help from anywhere in the house. So long as you put safety first, living with MS can be manageable.
