What Multiple Sclerosis Patients Need To Know

A great way to get started is to read the following article. A pleasant time doing so, you will enjoy for sure.

Multiple sclerosis is a debilitating disease that attacks the body's central nervous system. Multiple sclerosis patients can experience symptoms such as vision and hearing impairment, memory loss, and problems with balance and mobility. The effects of MS are far reaching, but treatment of this disease has greatly progressed. In this article, we'll discuss the symptoms of the disease and how to make the lives of people with multiple sclerosis easier.

The disease multiple sclerosis attacks the protective covering of the brain and spinal cord, causing inflammation and often damaging the myelin in patches. Multiple sclerosis symptoms vary greatly from person to person and can include vision disturbances, extreme fatigue, loss of balance, problems with coordination, stiffness of muscles, speech problems, bladder and bowel problems, short-term memory problems, and even partial or complete paralysis. Multiple sclerosis treatment can minimize the impact of these symptoms and allow patients and their family to live a relatively normal life. MS treatment can have some side effects, so you should notify your doctor immediately if you experience an adverse reaction to your medication.

The symptoms of multiple sclerosis can impair your ability to perform ordinary tasks like showering, and the bathroom can be a particularly dangerous place for multiple sclerosis patients. You should have hand rails and other supports installed in the bathtub. MS sufferers are advised not to lock the bathroom door and to shower only when someone else is at home. If you live alone, then sit down when showering and don't take baths to avoid drowning. Keep a rubber bath mat on the floor of the shower, and pad the edge of the tub with a folded towel. To prevent burns, turn on the cold water first. You may also want to consider installing a fall-alarm system.

The kitchen can also be a minefield for MS sufferers. You should cook using a microwave to avoid burns and fires. If you do use a stove, then select a model with controls located at the front, use the back burners whenever possible, and use a stove guard which fits around the side or front of the stove. It's a good idea to buy a kettle with an automatic switch-off. You should also avoid using appliances such as an electric egg beater and electric carving knives. When loading a dishwasher, point blades and other sharp objects downward. Keep regularly used household items such as utensils and towels where they can be easily reached.

The world can be perilous for multiple sclerosis patients, so take the necessary steps to make your home a haven. Be aware of where you place furniture, make sure rugs are secure, and keep a portable phone or beeper close at hand so that you can get help in the event of an accident. As long as you put safety first, living with MS can be manageable. For more information, contact the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation or the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Today's Tip On Multiple Sclerosis

MS treatment and medications have proven to be effective in controlling the symptoms, and there is hope for a cure. Researchers are trying to develop techniques to repair damaged myelin and nerve fibers. Scientists are also trying to understand why the immune system attacks the body's myelin so that these attacks can be prevented. Given enough time and funding, hopefully one day there will be a cure for multiple sclerosis. Until that time, continue to live as full a life as you can.
