The Multiple Sclerosis Diet: What You Should Know

Reading the current article top to bottom will give you an excellent understanding of this topic.

For anyone diagnosed with MS, it's recommended to learn more about creating a proper multiple sclerosis diet plan that can promote optimal health. Nutrition can play a very important role in everyone's health, including individuals with multiple sclerosis. A diagnosis of MS may be overwhelming, but following a healthy diet plan doesn't have to be. When it comes to choosing what foods to eat and what foods to avoid, the guidelines are very similar for people with MS and people without it.

It's important to avoid excessive amounts of caffeine, sugar, alcohol and overly processed foods. This doesn't mean that you can never enjoy a cup of coffee or a glass of wine -- it simply means you should speak with your doctor or nutritionist regarding proper limits and what constitutes moderation. For example, one cup of coffee may be considered OK for you while three may be excessive. Some people think carbohydrates are bad. The truth is that carbs are necessary for survival, but that some carbs are much healthier than others. Always choose whole grains whenever possible. There are lots of whole grain choices on the market these days, including breads, crackers, rice and pasta made with healthy whole grains.

Balance is important when it comes to eating well. Aim for a good mix of healthy protein combined with complex whole grain carbs. Healthy fats are important too, and include things like omega oils and olive oil. It's even thought that omegas can fight inflammation and potentially reduce the severity of symptoms in some MS sufferers. Researchers are currently considering the role vitamins play in the prevention, development and management of MS. Your doctor will likely recommend you take a daily multivitamin and perhaps a fish oil supplement if you don't eat a sufficient amount of fish. If you are interested in the use of herbs and other supplements for your MS, you may want to consult a naturopath, who is a specialist trained in the use of herbs and foods for healing.

In addition to consulting with your doctor, dietician or nutritionist, it can be helpful to read some books on the subject of nutrition and MS. The Multiple Sclerosis Diet Book by Roy Laver Swank and Barbara Brewer Dugan is a good place to begin. This book will teach you proper guidelines for a healthy diet and even provide recipes to get you started. Anyone coping with a diagnosis of MS can benefit from a nutritious diet and perhaps even regular exercise as recommended by their doctor.

Today's Tip On Multiple Sclerosis

There are so many things that can be done to make a home safer for people living with multiple sclerosis. For instance, choose furniture with rounded edges, put protective padding around the corners of tables, and whenever possible, place furniture against the wall. Use a portable phone or beeper so that the patient can call for help from anywhere in the house. So long as you put safety first, living with MS can be manageable.
