Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that directly affects the CNS or central nervous system by breaking down protective tissue called myelin. It may also affect the actual nerve fibers as well, causing legions to appear. The damage of the myelin and nerve fibers is what causes the various symptoms of MS. Symptoms can vary widely from person to person and might include spasms, tremor, unexplained tingling, headaches, mobility issues, bladder and bowel incontinence, vision and hearing difficulties and more. Symptoms of MS may be chronic or intermittent and occur in varying degrees of severity.

These days, MS is often treated with a combination of remedies that may include prescription medication, corticosteroid treatments, physical therapy, and other types of therapy depending on what symptoms are most prevalent. Today's advanced medicine is a far cry from times like the late 1800s when diseases like MS were treated with various herbs and bedrest. Treatments at that time were simply not effective because the disease was not properly understood. Some patients today (with help from their doctors) combine modern medicine with alternative remedies to create a treatment regimen that is customized to their needs.

The good news regarding the historical significance of MS is that there is more known about this disease today than ever before. Medical and scientific researchers are closer to a cure than they've ever been. Thanks to organizations like the National MS Society, people diagnosed with MS have lots of helpful information and supportive resources in their corner. If you have a loved one recently diagnosed with MS, learning as much as you can about this disease can be a great way to offer comfort and support.
