Glyconutrients and Multiple Sclerosis

Lately, more attention is being paid to the connection between glyconutrients and multiple sclerosis. Glyconutrients are sugars that are thought to have immense healing potential and the ability to promote regeneration and improved recognition at a cellular level. It's thought that glyconutrients have an effect on the central nervous system, which plays a role in many health-related issues including MS. In addition, these nutrients are thought to lower bad cholesterol and promote good cholesterol. In various studies on animals, glyconutrients have been shown to improve a variety of different conditions but whether or not they work as effectively on humans has not been determined.
There are eight glyconutrients that are essential to human health. They are as follows: Fucose, galactose, glucose, mannose, N-acetylgalactosamine, N-acetylglucosamine, N-acetylneuraminic acid, and xylose. Each one of these nutrients performs a different function. For example, fucose is thought to protect against respiratory infections and allergic reactions while improving cellular communication. Galactose is thought to speed the healing of wounds, inhibit tumor growth, increase calcium absorption and enhance the communication between cells. Glucose is a source of quick energy and is related to a variety of conditions, while mannose is related to fighting infection and remodeling the body's tissue.
N-acetylgalactosamine and N-acetylgalactosamine haven't been researched as much as some of the other glyconutrients, but are thought to factor into heart disease because some patients with heart disease were shown to have levels of these two sugars that were lower than average. Finally, there's N-acetylneuraminic acid which occurs abundantly in human breastmilk and is thought to be very important for the development of the brain. All of these glyconutrients can be found in natural sources or taken in supplement form.
So, is the connection between glyconutrients and multiple sclerosis significant for patients of this condition? Although definitive research is yet to give us an answer, all signs point to yes. If you would like to learn more about glyconutrients and what they can do for you, speak to your doctor or nutritionist. There are a variety of books on the subject as well, including Sugars That Heal: The New Healing Science of Glyconutrients by Emil I. Mondola and Mindy Kitei and The Healing Power of 8 Sugars: An Amazing Breakthrough in Nutrition, Sciences and Medicine. Before taking any kind of supplements or dramatically changing your diet, be sure to get approval from your doctor.

Today's Tip On Multiple Sclerosis
There are so many things that can be done to make a home safer for people living with multiple sclerosis. For instance, choose furniture with rounded edges, put protective padding around the corners of tables, and whenever possible, place furniture against the wall. Use a portable phone or beeper so that the patient can call for help from anywhere in the house. So long as you put safety first, living with MS can be manageable. |
