Recognizing the Early Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis

Knowing that you need to better understand this topic I recommend that you take 5 minutes to read what we have to say.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disorder that affects the central nervous system (CNS.) The central nervous system consists of the spine, brain and various nerves. The nerves are protected by tissue called myelin which also helps transmit impulses. Sufferers of MS have damaged and/or missing myelin and sometimes also damaged nerve fibers. This damage is what causes the symptoms associated with MS. Knowing how to recognize the early symptoms of multiple sclerosis is important. Although there is no cure at this time, MS can be managed with various types of medication and therapy.
There are a variety of symptoms which may occur early during the onset of MS. Problems with vision may occur, including a condition called optic neuritis. With optic neuritis, the vision of one eye is normally affected. There may be eye pain or uncontrollable jerking in addition to double vision, shimmering vision or a decrease in vision quality. Another symptom that may be experienced is that of arm and/or leg sensations including tingling and numbness. Fatigue is yet another commonly occurring symptom in MS patients. In many cases, fatigue is worse during the afternoon hours. Changes in bladder function such as incontinence and bodily spasms are other symptoms that may occur with MS.
Because all of these symptoms can also be caused by other factors, it is important to consult with your doctor. The unfortunate fact is that MS is not something that can be diagnosed by one simple test. In fact, multiple sclerosis is often diagnosed using a combination of tests which may include CT scans, MRIs, and spinal fluid examination. Your doctor will also evaluate your symptoms in depth as a definitive diagnosis consists of two or more symptom occurrences and one to two lesions present on the spinal column and/or brain.
If you or a family member exhibit any of the early symptoms of multiple sclerosis, tell your doctor. He or she will inform you on the best way to proceed and whether or not further tests are a good idea. Most likely, your doctor will want to rule out more common causes of any symptoms before proceeding with an MRI or spinal tap. While MS is most common in women between the ages of 18 and 40, it can occur in either gender and at any age.

Today's Tip On Multiple Sclerosis
There are so many things that can be done to make a home safer for people living with multiple sclerosis. For instance, choose furniture with rounded edges, put protective padding around the corners of tables, and whenever possible, place furniture against the wall. Use a portable phone or beeper so that the patient can call for help from anywhere in the house. So long as you put safety first, living with MS can be manageable. |
