Care for Multiple Sclerosis
![]() |
The following article contains information that will surely guide you into every aspect.
Multiple sclerosis, commonly referred to as MS is an autoimmune disease which affects the functioning of the central nervous system or CNS. When a diagnosis of MS is reached, it will fall under one of four clinical courses. They are relapsing-remitting, primary-progressive, secondary-progressive and progressive-relapsing. Intensity of symptoms experienced may be mild, moderate or severe. There is no cure for MS but there are ways to care for multiple sclerosis. Proper management of this disease can allow many patients to continue normal activities and live a normal life span.
The first way to care for yourself or a loved one who has been diagnosed with MS is to learn as much as you can about the disorder. There are lots of myths associated with multiple sclerosis which can make proper understanding of this disease difficult. Talking with your doctor can ease your fears and help you separate fact from fiction regarding multiple sclerosis. There are lots of educational resources available, including those provided by the National MS Society, that can help you more clearly understand this condition.
An important part of MS management is a healthy diet and exercise plan that's been approved by your doctor. Many people think that MS sufferers cannot exercise. On the contrary, exercise is often recommended for many patients. In addition to following a healthy nutritional and exercise regimen, reducing one's level of stress can also be beneficial. This may mean using behavioral therapy, antidepressants or lifestyle changes.
Some patients also need medication to help manage their symptoms. The type of medication you may need will depend on the category your MS falls under and what your doctor thinks is best. In addition to daily medications, some doctors use corticosteroids to help patients suffering from excaberated symptoms. An excaberation is a period when symptoms are more prevalent. Various factors increase the likelihood of an excaberation, including extreme temperatures or infection.
To learn more about care for multiple sclerosis, talk to your doctor. A diagnosis of MS can be overwhelming and frightening for the patient and their loved ones. Proper education regarding MS can make a big difference when it comes to coping with the diagnosis and managing symptoms that may occur. Your doctor can answer all your questions and provide you with a variety of helpful literature about multiple sclerosis.

Today's Tip On Multiple Sclerosis
There are so many things that can be done to make a home safer for people living with multiple sclerosis. For instance, choose furniture with rounded edges, put protective padding around the corners of tables, and whenever possible, place furniture against the wall. Use a portable phone or beeper so that the patient can call for help from anywhere in the house. So long as you put safety first, living with MS can be manageable. |
